Eucharistic Meditation – August 6th

When Jesus established this meal with his disciples, He said that this was the new covenant in His blood. What is this new covenant? Jeremiah promised this: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring then out of the land of Egypt… For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God and they shall be my people.” (Jer. 31:31-33) And a little farther on he says, “I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, for their own good and the good of their children after them. I will make with them an everlasting covenant that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me.” (Jer. 32:39-40) This is the new covenant in the blood of Christ, the promise of God to write His law on our hearts, putting the fear of the Lord in our hearts, that we might not turn away from Him, that He might do good to us and to our children. So let this be your prayer as come to this table: Lord, teach me to fear you, to love your law, and give us one heart and one way, that we may walk in your goodness. And then remember what the signs of this new covenant are: the broken body and shed blood of our Savior. Your Savior was crushed to secure the answer to that prayer. The Lamb of God was slain in order that we might live for Him, that we might love Him and fear Him, together with our children forever. So fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith. So come: eat, drink, and believe.
