Trinity Sunday IV: Eucharistic Meditation

“The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of one bread… You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy?… Whoever, therefore eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord… That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.”

This is the table of the Lord, and all those who belong to Jesus are invited here. But you cannot come here and hold on to your sin. If you try to do that, you provoke Jesus to jealousy and He will deal with you. But if see your sin and hate your sin and want it gone, then come. Come for the strength to kill your sin. Come for the mercy and grace Christ has for you for that sin. Do not pretend that you are good. Do not pretend that you somehow deserve a place at this table. Do not come with arrogance or pride or boasting. Come in humility and simple joy. Come knowing that it is all grace. Not grace that leaves you alone. Not grace that sweeps your sin under the rug. No, this a fierce and raging grace, grace like a storm that will tear right through you, exposing everything about you, and yet a grace full of love and goodness. When you take this bread and drink this wine, the storm of the Spirit comes down upon you.
